Residential

It was not until 1878 that plans were put in place to develop the area as a residential subdivision. John Wetherill subdivided his vast estate in an attempt to attract homebuyers to the area but he was largely unsuccessful and much of the land was later bought by the state abattoirs. These were sold in the 1980s and the site was redeveloped for the Sydney Olympic Games with large areas of medium and high density housing. The suburb of Newington, initially used as the Sydney 2000 Athletes Village, was planned, constructed and managed with environmental principles in mind.
