The Olympic Games

Sydney hosted the 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The bid to host these prestigious events relied heavily on the promise of a ‘green games’.

The coordinated redevelopment of Homebush Bay and Sydney Olympic Park included:

  • a large variety of world class sporting venues including Sydney International Aquatic Centre, the Archery Centre, and Sydney International Athletic Centre

  • a commercial precinct including restaurants and cafes

  • a suburban area for temporary accommodation of athletes, which could later be converted to residential dwellings for the expanding population of Sydney

  • large areas of passive space in Millennium Parklands and restored natural ecosystems to meet environmental objectives

  • extensive rail and bus transportation infrastructure.
